D'Backdoor Green - Reuven Lim

The name of the building is D'Backdoor Green.

The purpose of the building is to serve the convenience of nearby citizens and industrial zone workers. There is a need for local convenience as there are no real dining options nearby except mama shops or taking a trip to Clementi Central.

The concept of the building is backdoor nature and convenience, which was chosen as it is healthy for the residents which have a large proportion of elderly and it is convenient for them not to have to travel a lot as it is difficult and inconvenient for them to have to go to Clementi Central regularly. The building is built in a grass field and has a green roof garden for residents to exercise and family bonding. The building has stone floors, wood wallpaper and a rough-stone toilet flooring to prevent slipping, which works with the greenery to create a calm natural atmosphere to suit the target audience. Other than that, the building is notable for the usage of hexagons in the exterior facade, tiling and lighting, inspired by the theme shape of SST.

Unique Buildings

Unique Shapes

Angles, curves and shapes give buildings "personality" and stand out.

Unique Colours

Colours give the building life and changes the mood of an otherwise plain environment.

Unique Lights

Lights brighten up the building and can make the colours, interior and exterior look better. Drab lighting is otherwise plain. Lights can also have fancy designs to be more unique.

Unique Textures

Textures give the surface of the building extra definition. A smooth surface from glass mirrors or marble are different from a rougher surface of painted cement.

Factors that affect the design

Factors that affect design:

Location
The surrounding area affects who goes there and the purpose of the building. E.g. office buildings and skyscrapers in CBD are all tall office buildings.

People
The people who go there affect the purpose of the building. E.g. building exercise areas in older estates, shopping centres at areas where there are many young people.

Culture
Ethnic groups may affect the design of the building. E.g. patterns and decor, building religious buildings in appropriate areas.

Ergonomics
Designing buildings to BETTER suit the people who go there. Similar to “People”. E.g. having lower toilet urinals in a kindergarten???
